Our Roots: The Legacy of St. Leonard

St. Leonard of France, a sixth-century monk, is recognized as the patron saint of prisoners. According to legend, a king, grateful for St. Leonard’s service, granted him land where he founded the Monastery of Noblac. The monastery became known as the first halfway house supporting individuals transitioning from incarceration.

The king trusted St. Leonard to select individuals in custody, provide care and guidance at Noblac, and support their integration with society. This model of firm but compassionate support inspired future community-based integration programs.

From France to Canada

The values reflected in St. Leonard’s work were first honoured in North America with the opening of a St. Leonard’s House in Chicago in 1954.

Later, Reverend Neil Libby established Canada’s first St. Leonard’s House in Windsor, Ontario, founded on similar principles of community support, accountability, and human dignity.

Founding of The St. Leonard’s Society of Hamilton

The St. Leonard’s Society of Hamilton was incorporated in 1972 as the Astra Society of Hamilton and District. It opened with an eight-bed residence on Strathcona Avenue, providing housing and support for individuals on community release.

In 1978, two century homes on Emerald Street South were purchased, expanding the program to 30 beds. In 1982, the organization formally affiliated with The St. Leonard’s Society of Canada and changed its name to The St. Leonard’s Society of Hamilton. In 1985, the two Emerald Street homes were joined, providing additional office and program space.

Expansion and Modernization

In 1988, a property on Robert Street was purchased, and in 1989, it opened as a second residence offering 22 beds for individuals integrating into the community following incarceration.

In 2017, the Emerald Street residence underwent a full renovation and expansion, increasing its capacity to 36 beds. It was renamed Clinton House in honour of John Clinton, who served as Executive Director from 1993 to 2020.

Today, The St. Leonard’s Society of Hamilton operates two Community Residential Facilities:

  • Clinton House – 34 beds
  • Robert Street Residence – 24 beds
